67.2cm (approx. 26 - 1/2") nagasa of shinogi zukuri form, with a gunome midare hamon and a maru boshi. Kuri nakagojiri with takanoha yasurime and signed "Seki Ju Nijusan Dai Kanefusa Saku Kore": civilian name Kato Koichi, born February 1890 and studied under Zennosuke Jumyo, considered himself 23rd generation Kanefusa, see Sesko's Index of Japanese Swordsmiths, pg. 118. Type 98 mounts with a leather wrapped saya and catch on fuchi slipcover. CONDITION: Good+. Sword is out of polish with some surface scratching and a frosted appearance, heavier handling marks and some chipping and patination at the moto. Mounts with some rubs, tsuba with plenty of gilt in recesses. Fuller and Gregory speculate that these leather-wrapped swords were the preferred mounts for Japanese Naval Landing Forces, but they may have also been Army related.
