Lot consists of: (A) Fine example of a Springfield Model 1880 hunting knife. The knife was designed as a multi-use tool for soldiers and could be used as both a traditional knife and an entrenching tool. This example is in standard configuration with single edged spearpoint blade, a brass guard, wood handle, and is complete with its original leather scabbard with brass hook. The brass guard is stamped "U.S. / Springfield" on the obverse and "1814" on the reverse. Scabbard and hook are both marked "WATERVLIET ARSENAL". CONDITION: Blade remains bright with scattered light blemishes. Walnut handle is clean. Legible markings and the guard exhibits a nice patina. Scabbard is supple with minor blemishes. Brass components of scabbard exhibit a pleasing patina. (B) The Model 1890 entrenching tool is sometimes designated the Model 1892 from the date on guard and handle socket, but is really the same as the 1880 hunting knife. This example is in standard configuration with single edged spearpoint blade, a brass guard, wood handle, and is complete with its original leather scabbard with brass hook. The brass guard is stamped "SPRINGFIELD ARMORY" on the obverse and "U.S. / 1892" on the reverse. Scabbard is marked ROCK ISLAND / ARSENAL" with inspector marks. Hook is marked "R.I.A.". CONDITION: Blade remains bright with scattered light blemishes. Walnut handle is clean. Legible markings and the brass exhibits a nice patina. Scabbard is supple with minor crazing.
