Slave badges, often referred to as "tags", are unique to Charleston and Charleston Neck. The badges were created for the use of slave owners who allowed their slaves to be rented out. Although the practice of renting slaves was common throughout the South, Charleston and Charleston Neck were the only places where slaves were required to wear a badge or identification marker at all times when off the plantation. This example measures approximately 1 - 3/4" and is marked "CHARLESTON / 1860 / PORTER / 1363". Copper construction with heavy patina as this example appears ground dug. CONDITION: Relic.
