Built on the robust No 44 1/2 action. The left side of the barrel is stamped C.C. Johnson. Johnson was a master gunsmith who began plying his trade in Thackery Ohio in 1933, moving his operation to Lawrenceville Ohio around 1947. He became famous for his single shot target rifles. He built this rifle using an original No. 49 Stevens single shot 25-20 Stevens caliber rifle. He machined an inset crown for accuracy. The Stevens full octagon barrel is still clearly stamped. The under side of 28 3/8" barrel has the number 2 for barrel type and it has the matching serial number to frame. The case color frame is factory engraved and features double set triggers (working) with the loop lever. The walnut stock features deluxe hand checkering, Schutzen style high comb stock with roll over cheek piece and heavy swiss butt plate. The Schnabel fore-end tip has a brass reinforcement plate. The barrel has a globe type front sight. The rear sight slot is empty and he installed a set of scope bases on which a Weaver J4 3/4" tube scope with an R.A. Litschert bell has been mounted. CONDITION: Excellent. Barrel retains about 90% blue, starting to thin out and showing some age freckles. The frame retains at least 90% case colors with sharp factory engraving. The stocks are excellent with sharp checkering. There is a small hairline at forearm tip which was the reason for the brass plate. The bore is bright. There is some finish loss on the scope mounts. Johnson is considered by many to be the successor to Harry Pope with regards to single shot target rifles.
