For an article concerning Jeffries and Drury basket hilts, removed markings on this pattern sword, and for another identical example with markings removed in this fashion, see "Man at Arms Magazine" Vol. 45, No. 6, December 2023. The article shows another example with the marking defaced in exactly this fashion. This pattern was made by the British in the mid-18th century for issue to its Highland Regiments, particularly troops in America, where many examples are found both dug and intact. This sword has a single edged blade with a partial fuller along the top on both sides. The original markings on both sides of the blade were a large crown over "GR / DRURY". On the right side of the blade, the "D" and "Y" in DRURY are partially visible. These markings were removed for American use during the Revolutionary War. The full basket has a series of pierced circles and triangles typical of this pattern. The wood grip retains its original leather wrap with a strand of twisted brass wire. There is a brass ferrule at the top of the grip, just below the coned pommel with ball capstan. below the grip there is a thick iron washer. CONDITION: Blade retains a freckled grey patina with a rounded tip and scattered "battle" nicks to cutting edge. Hilt retains a matching patina, one joint on basket has been repaired. Original grip very good with minor losses. Hilt is tight to blade. A very nice basket hilt that saw extensive service.
