Circa 1890. A vintage London best made dangerous game rifle with dovetail 27” blacked barrels. Barrels built with 3” chambers and extractors. Barrel top rib is wide, finely filed, and with one standing leaf sight at 100 yards and two folding at 200 and 300 yards. All leaves with platinum line markers. Rib with front blade sight and dolls head extension. Barrels read “MANTON & CO GUNMAKERS, LONDON & CALCUTTA”. “.577 3” SOLID TAPER CASE”. “BY APPOINTMENT TO H.E. THE VICEROY.” “167 GRS C&H POWDER, 570GRS EXPRESS BULLET”. Left bottom barrel stamped “J”. Barrel flats marked “”7780”, 577 EX” and with proofs. Bottom rib with loop for sling. Case colored and gray patina action with rebounding hammers, Jones underlever is stamped with serial number on water table. Action built with third fastener and double triggers. Hammers are color case hardened. Action frame and locks with light scroll. Locks engraved with “MANTON & CO”. Trigger guard extending to long bottom strap. Bottom strap engraved with serial number. Traditional reddish brown walnut stock with finely checkered pistol grip has case hardened steel grip cap. Stock with loop for sling and finished by an orange rubber pad. Splinter forend with blacked scroll engraved and checkered lever release. Interior iron metal is case hardened with and with serial number stamped. Rifle lives in vintage leather case with “MANTON & Co.” paper trade case label. Case comes with reloading tools, cleaning tools, striker pot and oil bottle. Exterior of lid reads “CAPTAIN GEORGE A. HARRISON, 79TH CAMERON HIGHLANDERS”. Weight is 10 lbs 10 oz. Accompanied by a copy of "The Double Rifle Primer" by Cal Pappas. CONDITION: Excellent. Barrels are excellent with light markings from use. Action is sound and with faded case colors. Stock is good with light handling marks. Forend is good with slight handling marks and small chip to checkering at rear of lever release. Case is good with signs of age and use. PROVENANCE: Cal Pappas Collection
CORRECTION: The wood has been revarnished, the barrels reblued, the pad is newer, and the front sight has been affixed by MarineTex or equivalent.
