Boulanger is recorded circa 1762-1784, initially as the auditor at Charlveille and the worker inspector. In 1763 he was the Controller of the Castle (probably a supervisory position) at St. Etienne, and is believed to have held similar positions at Maubeuge. Round barrel with flattened sides at chamber, with gilded and chased designs of geometrics and florals, with a panoply of arms at rear, and a more elaborate than typically seen spider at the front sight blade. Flat trumpet headed ramprod with slot of rear for patches is retained by a single turned ferrule before feeding into a reinforced mouth. Flat lock with a faceted and bridled pan signed "Boulanger St. Etienne", gooseneck cock, and slightly stepped at rear, with light floral engraving. Sideplate with light engraving. Wrist with elaborate relief floral scroll carving around the tnag, which is repeated ahead of the trigger guard finial, which is an elaborate urn with florals. Buttcap with stirrups and silver pommel cap with a panoply of arms. CONDITION: Barrel an even mixture of original bluing, brown toning, and some additional cold blue, with flashes of dove grey. Gilt with good definition, some thinning through base metal. Stock is very good as gently cleaned, with softening to carving throughout, with scattered handling marks and impressions throughout, including some spots of wood fill about the sideplate. Furniture cleaned in the European fashion over scattered darkness. Mechanically fine, bore with some areas of oxidation. A very attractive French pistol from the Revolutionary War period.
