While custom upgraded, this shotgun was manufactured as a 28 bore, with the front band correctly marked "20", feeder arm marked "28" and "28" at rear of receiver. Since manufacture, it was upgraded with floral scroll on a stippled ground, with gold lines used to accent vignettes of a relief gold grouse on left, and a snipe on right; the engraving is well executed and signed "T Wallace" in a scroll ahead of ejection port. Left side of barrel with designations for Winchester Proof Steel, Winchester trademark, 2 - 7/8" chamber, Full choke, and 28 gauge. Barrel with solid rib and a pierced front sight, probably for an insert, and depressed ivory mid bead. Upgraded wood checkered with decorative fluer-de-lis patterns and nicely marbled and lightly fiddled at stock. Pistol grip, with hard rubber grip cap with ivory insert which is scrimshawed "IV / V". Monte Carlo comb with an Olde English red rubber recoil pad. CONDITION: Very good as upgraded, retaining virtually all of the matte bluing with some very minor handling marks and thinning to sharp edges, with some very minor areas of silver, most offensive on left side of receiver. Engraving is crisp and well executed. Wood excellent, with some minor handling marks and superficial scratches, most offensive a collection of marks and impressions behind pistol grip commensurate with shooting with a watch on and some lengthier scratches towards toe. Pad is hardened with some scrapes and marks around screw holes. Mechanically fine, bore is very good, bright and smooth. True 28 bore Model 12s are quite scarce, and the custom work on this gun is well done. PROVENANCE: Jim Cyr Collection.
