Manufactured in 1844 by the Springfield Armory with the intent to issue to West Point cadets, with only 500 produced. Lock is dated 1844, meaning that this musket was part of the first 250, all of which were shipped to West Point between June and December of that year. Top left of barrel is marked with VP Eagle proofmark with no visible date near breech. Left flat of stock opposite lock is marked with faint "CB" cartouche. CONDITION: Very good as carefully polished to National Armory Bright with light freckling throughout. Ramrod, last barrel band, and breech tang are all replacements. Stock has been carefully cleaned with scattered handling marks throughout and repairs at tang near wrist and buttplate. Mechanically needs attention as hammer will not stay on half or full cock. Bore is dark. A fine example of a rare musket.
