This spontoon is pictured and described as plate 48.PAA on page 377 of "Battle Weapons of the American Revolution" by George C. Neumann. It is noted that it is in the author's collection and still retains two of George Neumann's tags including his signed yellow collection tag with description and drawing. Head is symmetrical and measures 15-5/8" in height. The wide leaf-shaped blade has a pair of bird head shaped base projections. Narrow mounting socket with small straps. George noted that this is from the Germanic area of Pennsylvania C. 1755-1780. Complete with 56" original haft, 71-1/4" overall. CONDITION: Head retains a brown patina, haft shows some smoothing from use and has a pleasing original surface. A very attractive documented pole arm from the most famous Revolutionary War collection ever assembled.
