Manufactured in 1887. The factory research states that this gun was shipped as a standard 1873 rifle in 44 caliber. For whatever reason, everything forward of the receiver was changed to a 38-40 carbine. The barrel has the two line Winchester stamped on top of barrel along with the PW and P proof on breech and everything forward of the frame is now a proper SRC barrel, tube, two barrel bands with a post front sight and a replaced Marbles full buckhorn rear. The frame still has the non tapered .44 frame, no provision for saddle ring and the butt stock is original with trapdoor rifle plate. The caliber marking has been cleaned from the brass carrier. CONDITION: Excellent. The stock is a hair shy to metal having been refinished long ago showing only a few impressions. The forearm color matches well but the finish is duller. The frame retains at least 85% original bright blue on left side with about 50% on right. No blue on dust cover. Barrel and tube are an 80% blue blending brown patina. The action is fine. The bore is bright. PROVENANCE: Jim Cyr Collection.
