Manufactured in 1888. Round barrel marked at breech "MADE FOR P. ORR & SONS MADRAS" along with British proof marks. Peter Orr began selling clocks in Madras, the modern city of Chennia, in India in 1846 and expanded the business through the 19th century as Madras grew into an important industrial center in British India. Rifle is finished in period reapplied blue, the receiver was likely case hardened originally. Modified dovetail blade front sight and "1886" marked 1000 yard ladder rear sight. Stocked in walnut with crescent rifle butt plate. CONDITION: Good. Rifle retains the majority of its fading reapplied blue with handling marks and some older cleaned oxidation spots. Markings are soft. Stocks appear cleaned with scattered dings and nicks. Rifling remains crisp although some cleaned oxidation spotting is present in the bore. Fine mechanics. A very interesting colonial Indian retailed Winchester in desirable big bore .45-90 chambering. PROVENANCE: Jim Cyr Collection.
