This lot is closed for bidding. Bidding ended on 9/11/2024
Originally manufactured at the Virginia Manufactory in 1814 for state use pursuant to the Militia Act of 1808, and then subsequently altered for Confederate use with a cone in barrel conversion in approximately 1861 by A.B. Barrett of Wytheville, Virginia. A very similar example is on page 92 of "Confederate Rifles & Muskets" by Murphy and Madaus. Lock is marked "Virginia / Manufactory" in front of hammer and "Richmond / 1814" behind hammer. Left side of barrel is marked with crude "P" proofmark often seen on similar muskets. Matching assembly numbers "22" observed on lock retaining plate, trigger guard, rear sling swivel, and rear and middle barrel bands. Lock mortise is numbered "39" when viewed upside down. Inside of trigger guard is numbered "33". Hammer is hand forged. Inside of lock is marked with "AD" inspector marking and cryptic sub-inspector circles on all major parts. Mainspring is marked with Roman Numerals. Left side of stock is marked "BM". CONDITION: Good, with all iron assemblies turned a freckled brown patina. Stock has been lightly cleaned with appropriate age related darkness throughout, and no major signs of distress. Mechanically fine. Bore is dark. An attractive and desirable Confederate musket.
