Manufactured in 1861 for Confederate use by the Richmond Armory using machinery and parts captured at Harper's Ferry. Early type 1 high hump lock is dated 1861 behind hammer and correctly marked "RICHMOND, VA." Inside of lock is unmarked. The barrel is dated 1859 near breech with VP Eagle proof mark, 3 leaf flip up rear sight, small front sight with square base, and 3 groove rifling, making it a US M1855 barrel, likely captured with the machinery and assembled with the rest of the gun. The stock is similar to the barrel as it is also a US M1855 stock cut for use with a Maynard tape primer. Stock furniture includes iron nosecap, barrel bands, and brass buttplate. Accompanied by a linen sling. CONDITION: Very good, with iron assemblies turned a speckled gray patina with heavy handling marks near muzzle. Barrel has remnants of Armory Bright polish underneath barrel bands. Stock has been lightly sanded and has handling marks throughout. Mechanically fine. Bore has well defined rifling.
