Boston Dec. 21, 1747, letter by William Shirley addressed to “William Pitt Esqr. Paymaster General of His Majesty’s Land Forces; or, to the Paymaster General for the time being.” He presents a bill for L200 Sterling for paying Edward Jackson for discharging NCOs and Private Men “of the state regiment under the command of Colonel Joseph Dwight,” raised for “the late intended expedition against Canada.” Boldly signed W. Shirley. Governor of Massachusetts Bay at the time, Shirley was largely responsible for the taking of Louisburg in 1745. Anticipated 1746 expeditions against Quebec and Fort St. Frederick, however, failed to gain necessary support from London and were called off. Shirley’s issue of paper currency and his own commercial ventures produced accusations of incompetence and corruption, and he spent roughly four years back in England starting in 1749 trying to put such matters to rest. 7 - 1/2 x 9 in. CONDITION: Very good.
