Lot #2012:
1780 INSPECTION RETURN 3RD MASS. REGT. AND PA. MILITIA FINES.
This lot is closed for bidding. Bidding ended on 5/13/2026
Lot consists of two items: A) “Inspection return of the 3d Massachusetts Regiment of Foot Commanded by John Greaton October 6th 1780.” 13” by 16 - 1/4” CONDITION: Good. Minor fading, foxing. Old tape repair to center fold. Full return of officers, NCOs, rank and file, with numbers absent on various duties, those “fit for action,” etc. with notes also on arms on hand, number of bayonets and number of cartridge boxes. An invaluable insider’s look at a Continental Army regiment. B) “The State of Pennsylvania on Account with John Hubley Capn.1st Compy. 8th Batt. Lanr. Coy. Militia” 1p. 8 - 1/2 x 16 - 1/2 in. Two columns dated May and June 1780: an account of money collected by Hubley as fines and then paid to Col. Ross. These were likely cash fines for delinquencies in arms or equipment by men in Hubley’s militia company noted as occurring on two different Mondays in May, likely regular inspections, and at the end of May on a “Field day.” A contrast to the discipline evident in the strict accounting of the Continental Army return. CONDITION: Very Good.
Item Dimensions: 16" X 10"
