The Leo Canda Manufacturing Co. produced this machine in January of 1900. Unlike the more common Caille Quintettes, this Canda version was born out of the imaginary shop of Leo Canda, 713 - 717 Sycamore St., Cincinnati, Ohio. His five reel card machine called the "Model Card Machine" designed in 1893 was refined to become the more well-known "Perfection Card Machine" three short years later. That also spawned the larger versions known as the "Counter Perfection" and eventually the "Upright Perfection". Then, on January 9th, 1900, the patent was applied for that put five upright perfections together to create what he called the "Card Machine". By the end of 1901, Caille had picked up on Canda's idea and started producing the Caille Quintette. Only two or three of the original Canda machines are known to have survived. A rare opportunity to own an original Leo Canda "Card Machine" survivor. Unlike the Quintette, the Canda models were a more plain design. The wooden case design on this particular machine has had an early faux-marbleized paint applied by a local restoration company in Ohio in 1988. The mechanism is all original and free of any breaks, cracks or repairs. There are four replacement cards on the five reel strips, two on the left-hand middle reel and two on the bottom reel. All other cards on the reel strips are original to the machine. Works well. Don't miss this chance for one of the earliest card machines known.
