Circa 1600. This elaborate example is painted with the front face showing a medieval reimaging of the story of David and Bathsheba, with a crowned king holding a lute looking out a parapet and gazing upon a woman who is being bathed by her servants. Other motifs include florals and geometrics on the sides with underside bare. Elaborate locking mechanism utilizes a triple bolt system which can only be retracted through use of the key which actuates a lever. Interior compartment is lined with old velvet, with adhesive coming off and releasing velvet in several areas with one patch completely detached. Complete with key. CONDITION: Very good, painting has been overpainted with visible texturing underneath, but old and probably period. Delamination from hand forging is visible. Metal has acquired a lovely brown patina where not painted. These boxes are absolutely fascinating examples of period engineering and this is a fantastic example. EMW
