Circa 1840s-50s. 7” clip point blade marked on upper face of blade "J.D. CHEVALIER NEW YORK". Nickel silver frame handle and guard with ivory scales, red velvet spacer at front of guard. 11" overall length. Red morocco leather sheath with nickel silver mounts. CONDITION: Blade appears unsharpened with original polish and patches of scattered spotting, and has been lightly cleaned. Handles with a few pin cracks and 1 small chip on reverse. Sheath with minor scuffing and loss. Accompanied by a Certificate of Authenticity from the Antique Bowie Knife Association, dated 1979, and a framed display piece with a detailed illustration of the knife and a quote from Carol Hutchins in the "The Gun Report," February 1973, which appears neatly hand done. A fine and desirable Chevalier bowie knife in outstanding condition, illustrated in The Antique Bowie Knife Book by Adams, Voyles, and Moss, pg. 89. Formerly part of the Tommie Jones collection.
