Lot consist of (A) Based on the British Foreign Service Helmet, the US Army adopted their own sun helmet in the early 1880s as part of new efforts to issue a summer uniform. The M1880 sun helmets were specified in General Order No. 72 and issued in November 1880. The eagle plate was not worn on these helmets. The helmet features nice insignia, with a spike ending in oak leaf and acorn designs, shield braid hooks, "RU" chinstrap hooks, and beautiful bullion engineers insignia which was sewn to the front of the helmet. The interior of the helmet features a leather sweatband and velvet lining. The original manufacturing stamps are present on the interior of the spike and denote manufacture by Pettibone Mfg. Co., patented March 1, 1892. The sweatband is also stamped with the Pettibone marking. Original paper size label of 6-7/8 is present. CONDITION: This example is nicely preserved and exhibits a few scattered bug holes which penetrate the helmet. Insignia exhibits a pleasing patina. Bullion engineers insignia is excellent. A few areas of loss around the leather rim. Velvet lining is torn in some areas. Sweatband exhibits wear. Overall very good. (B) US Navy Fore & Aft hat contained in its japanned case. The hat exhibits correct naval insignia and is marked by Horstmann on the interior. CONDITION: The hat exhibits light areas of fur loss. Interior is excellent. Case exhibits heavy areas of finish loss. Overall very good. JLD
