Susan Agnew pictured on oil painting on left, circa 1840. Two indian blankets(We believe the green border and fringe on the blankets were possibly added later because of the edges fraying), beaded necklace, Cherokee book belonging to Susan Agnew and two pictures. In 1938 Susan Agnew(given English name - born in 1830 and died in 1912) was only 8 years old when she and her Cherokee family were rounded up along with approximately 13,000 Cherokees and began their march across Tennessee, then north across Kentucky into southern Illinois where they crossed the Mississippi River into Missouri. Crossing Missouri, the Cherokees entered Arkansas near the northwest corner and arrived in the Cherokee Nation of Oklahoma. Reports say the death rate was appalling - nearly 4,000 Cherokee died during the trek. The Cherokee Indians appropriately called this the "TRAIL OF TEARS" Susan Agnew married Dr. Irwin D. Loeser(1812 - 1877) who was originally from Pennsylvania and was 18 years her senior. Dr. Loeser built a log home in Tahlequah, Oklahoma. This is the oldest standing building in Tahlequah and is also known as "Loeser Cabin". Today, it is on the Oklahoma National Register. Dr. Loeser was the only Physician in Tahlequah during the Civil War and according to reports, he tended persons on both sides of the divided Cherokee Nation.
