41" barrel, .50bore-percussionSamuel Morrison crafted extremely fine rifles at his shop in Milton Borough, Northumberland County Penn. from 1826-1843. This beautifully crafted rifle sports the very unusual mule ear side hammer percussion system that was popular in the 1830’s but is rarely seen on this style of rifle. The rifle features a full octagon barrel with a set rear sight and a dove tail front. The barrel is stamped S. Morrison Milton Pa. The full length stock retains the majority of the original finish with the striped pattern, a small left side cheek piece and some delicate incised carving on the left side. It is decorated with 16 silver half circle stock plates as well as a moon face, tear drop and hearts. The patchbox in its intricate design was obviously influenced by Samuel as you can see on page 292 in the book Kentucky rifle patchboxes vol. 2 by Chandler and Whisker. There is also a brass hand grip plate, stock is in very good condition with a beautiful finish with some light grain separation on left side above plate but is solid with a perfect wrist. The barrel and lock are a smooth dark chocolate patina. The rod is a replacement. An extremely handsome full stock Penn. rifle of the 1830’s from a famous maker with an even more famous family lineage in excellent condition.
