38" barrel, .40bore-percussionJacob F Gehrett operated his gun shop in Huntington County in Pa. just prior to the Civil War. He was a protégé of Samuel Gehrett who built rifles in this county during the 1820s. The full octagon barrel has J F Gehrett stamped on the top flat. The lock is stamped with a large H with an arrow through it. It is a full stock with the striped pattern and has double set triggers. The barrel has a fixed rear sight with a dove tail front. The barrel is a clean gun metal gray with age spots and has a brass for end tip and 3 small brass rod retaining thimbles, has a brass trigger guard, brass butt plate with brass toe protector. The left brass side plate has initials R C engraved; there was a star on the left stock which is now missing. It has a heart shaped thumb piece, a simply decorated brass patch box with a small heart cut out. The toe of the stock has a contained crack; the lock is a dark brown patina. The balance of the stock is in fine condition no cracks. The hammer will cock only when the rear set trigger is engaged at which point the hammer will stay cocked and will come down on nipple by pulling the front hair trigger.
