38-1/2" in .44 bore-percussion. The top barrel flat on this octagon rifle is stamped “S.M. Schillito”. The Schillito family settled in Franklin County, Pennsylvania in 1740 where S.M. Schillito was born in 1824. S.M Schillito apprenticed with his father until 1852, when he took over the business and continued until 1864. Very few Schillito rifles have survived, most of them seem to have been made during the percussion era. This example is a very simple hunting rifle that lacks any adornment aside from the beautiful patch box. The wood stock, while finished in the typical striped fashion, is simplistic in its design. It is in excellent, all original condition with no cracks but does have some minor areas of roughness. The brass is a dark mustard color and has never been touched. Features double set triggers. Lock is not marked. Barrel and lock are a dark chocolate brown patina. Nice Franklin County Pennsylvania rifle.
