44” barrel in .44 bore-percussion. James Brown & Son is listed in the gunsmith directory of Pittsburgh in the mid-19th century. The company name is stamped on the breech of barrel. Features a heavy octagon barrel with set rear sight and dovetail front. Lock is not signed. Appears to be a conversion or lock was replaced, as it does not fit the channel. Has a pinned barrel, three brass retaining thimbles, and brass trigger guard, buttplate, and patch box. Features double set triggers. Barrel and lock are dark brown patina. Richly finished striped stock. Small chip at front forearm, back of lock, and toe. Fine Pennsylvania rifle.
