Caliber is .65 bore. Has a 39 inch barrel. This is a B.S.A. which stands for British Small Arms. 1865 dated rifle musket with a crown with "D" or "R" on lock plate. It is percussion system. Features three barrel bands, sling swivels on middle band and guard. Single shot. Has a simple leaf rear sight with small blade front. The two middle barrel bands are from a United States musket. The barrel is a dark brown patina with some roughness around nipple. The walnut stock is very good with no cracks, but the usual war dings. Has a crude repair at rear trigger guard bow. The rear tang is repaired rather crudely with replaced screws. Has the brass butt plate. The side plate and hammer are a clean smooth ground patina. There is some visible rifling in bore. This appears to be a typical contract rifled musket based on the pattern 1853 type 3. These were widely smuggled into the south and this type of rifle was one of the most widely used in the Confederacy. It makes perfect sense that the rifles saw heavy use and saw field repairs and parts were replaced from US muskets.
BRITISH B.S.A. 1865 RIFLE MUSKET.
