.30-40 U.S. caliber with a 24" barrel. Early features on this flat side include the one piece lever, early tang mark and the early barrel stamp. The barrel sports a later matted ramp sight and the left side of the frame was tapped for a receiver peep sight. Sporting rear sight. The barrel retains 85% of the high polished blued finish. The frame retains approximately 90% of the original high polish blue finish with wear at bottom of magazine and high edge areas. Barrel was shortened at the time the custom front sight was added. Wood is very good, has some grain separation in butt stock and is a bit shy to metal. Excellent forend with no cracks or chips. Near mint bore. Perfect action. Only the first 5,000 guns were made with the flat receivers. This gun was manufactured in the second year of production in 1896. This rifle contains a lot of condition for an early flat side in the U.S. caliber.
