Serial number is 3246, caliber is .38 rim fire, barrel length is 24-1/2". This rare unusual gun "The Oliver" is considered a taxidermist's shotgun. The .38 rim fire caliber tapers to .28 gauge smooth bore, has a 24-1/2" barrel, has a nickel finish, a wood detachable shoulder stock with the dogs head gutta percha grips, five shot single action, spur trigger with a rear sight set into frame. When looking down the barrel you will notice that the rifling stops about mid way and becomes a smooth bore. The cylinders do not lock in to place. Bore is excellent and barrel retains 98% original finish. The frame and cylinder retain approximately 70% original finish with some light aged freckling and some brown patina on cylinder. The top of the frame is stamped "The Oliver", 38 caliber rimfire, pat. 2871 May 27.79. The walnut stock is excellent, does not have a buttplate nor was one ever fitted, it is just all wood and has a mounted screw in pin that attaches to the butt of the revolver. Stock is excellent with no cracks or chips. Gun was manufactured 1902-1914. There is an article on the long tom gun (example used was stamped Scott and used an identical style shoulder stock). This article appeared in June 1978 in Gun Report magazine. Little to no information is available as to how many types of these guns were built nor by whom, but it makes for one interesting conversation piece and a type of gun you will probably never see at any show.
