34" barrel in .44 bore-percussion. The Shuler Brothers; Joseph, John and Samuel. Brother John made his shop in Millerstown and then Liverpool in Perry County, Pennsylvania. He was very successful due to the quality of his rifles. John specialized in making these over-under rifles, which was an extremely tedious process, as any maker of double rifles can attest; it is extremely difficult to get two barrels to shoot at the same point of aim. These double rifles produced by John, are considered some of, if not, the finest of their type ever manufactured. This rifle was manufactured in the 1830-40s and features slender, finely finish full octagon barrels, each with its own set of sights, stamped “John Schuler, Liverpool, Pa”. The left side was mounted with three brass thimbles to retain the original wooden rod. It is a single hammer with tear-drop engraved lock plate manufactured by N. Ashmore. The left sideplate is engraved brass. Features double set triggers; finely finished curly maple stock; with brass buttplate, toe plate, trigger guard, and patch box. The patch box is beautifully engraved. Trigger guard has simple engraving. Has a brass thumb plate. Left side of stock does not have a cheek piece, but has an engraved silver decoration. Barrels are a smooth clean grey-brown soft patina and stamped “John Schuler, Liverpool, Pa”. Brass has aged to a lovely untouched mustard hue. The stock is in near mint condition with all the original finish. Arguably one of the finest manufactured Perry County over-under rifles in all original condition.
