Serial number is NSV, caliber is .50-70 govt, barrel length is 32-1/2". Standard U.S. Springfield with 1864 dated lock plate that was converted by the government after the Civil War using a mix of musket and new trapdoor parts. This allowed the government to utilize the countless surplus Civil War rifles on hand that were altered to fire the self contained .50 caliber cartridge. This rifle still retains a Civil War era military folding rear sight. All metal surfaces are a smooth gun metal gray mixing with some light blue, the breech block is dated 1866 with eagle head, lock plate stamped U.S. Springfield model 1864, buttplate and barrel bands have U.S. stamp. Walnut stocks are excellent with raised grain, proud to metal with usual abrasions but no cracks. Cartouche is no longer visible. Bore is strong and clean, action is fine. The Allen conversions were some of the earliest big bore rifles manufactured for the self contain cartridge and were extremely popular on the Western frontier.
