.30-40 Krag with a 22" barrel. For all intents and purposes this appears to a standard 1899 Krag carbine. It has the proper carbine stock with the 1899 S.A.A. cartouche on left wrist with the type seven hardguard used on the 1899 carbine and Model 1898 rifle, and the 1901 rear sight that is stamped "C" for carbine on both the right side rail and rear leaf. The only item on this carbine that is not proper is the barrel, which has the turned muzzle like those found on the Philippine constabulary. This is described on page 268 of the "American Krag Rifle & Carbine" by Joe Poyer as "U.S. magazine carbine, caliber .30, Model of 1899, altered knife bayonet and sling". These short rifles were made at the Manilla arsenal for the Philippine Constabulary and at the Springfield Armory and Rock Island Arsenal for schools offering military officer training courses. The Springfield Armory remanufactured 350 U.S. magazine carbine, Model of 1899 altered for knife bayonet. This carbine presents the question why a standard 1899 carbine, with standard carbine stock, sports the altered barrel but no other parts, nor is the configuration proper for a Philippine short rifle. It is simply all original 1899 carbine with the altered barrel. By changing the barrel with a proper carbine barrel this would be a carbine. In either case an interesting variation. The barrel is basically gun metal grey, as is the frame and magazine. Walnut stocks are near mint with proper cartouche on left and "P" on bottom, no cracks or chips, but with beautiful original factory finish. Strong rifled bore and a perfect action.
