Serial number is 498881. barrel length is 32-5/8", caliber is 45-70 govt. Standard issue Springfield model 1873 with all original parts and finish. The side plate retains approximately 30% original blue, balance of metal parts are a smooth pleasing brown patina with no abrasions, walnut stocks are very good, all original, never sanded with usual minor abrasions. The left side has the SWP 1884 cartouche in rectangular box (Samuel Porter). Wrist has the script P in circle. This rifle has a Springfield research letter that states this serial number is listed as a Springfield Armory Model 1884 and was issued to Elwood Barrick, Company C, 51st Iowa volunteer infantry. 1898 Spanish American war data found in U.S. archives, Washington D.C., record group 94. The 51st Iowa volunteers departed arrived in Manilla on December 6, 1898 and continued to the Phillipines. They suffered 48 casualties during their tour which included many notable battles which included Guadeloupe Church 3-5-99 Quingus 4-23-99 east and west Pullian 4/24/99 Calumpit 4/25/99, San Thomas May & June 5-1-99, San Fernando 5-5-99 through June and Culutut and Angeles June to December of 1899. Very interesting rifle that could be tied not only to a unit but to an actual individual solider.
