Caliber .52 percussion. Barrel 37-1/2". Adam W. Spies was a dealer in New York City, NY in the mid 19th century. It is unknown as to whether he made this rifle or was simply the retailer. The lock is stamped "AW Spies". The barrel is not signed. This is a fairly typical 19th century half stock percussion sporting long rifle. Features include: a full octagon barrel with metal bottom rib, two metal thimbles (rod missing). The butt plate, toe plate, trigger guard, nose cap, thimble and patch box are all made of unadorned brass. The stock is a light maple with light stripes and sports a single barrel wedge and single trigger. The lock is lightly engraved. Sports a standard dove tail rear sight and blade front. All metal surfaces are a dark chocolate brown patina. Original stock is very good with note to following: there is a hairline crack on right forearm from lock to cap and a small chip at toe. The brass remains a rich mustard hue. Working condition with a strong rifle bore with minor abrasions.
