10 bore, 31.5" barrel length. The firm of Lane & Reed manufactured firearms in Boston from 1826 to 1849. Offered is a single barrel percussion side hammer single shot 10 bore fowling piece with a smooth bore and half stock. This quality sporting arm was manufactured circa 1840s and features: part octagon to round barrel, single trigger, checkered walnut half stock with shotgun butt. Top of the barrel is stamped "Lane & Reed Boston". Features an engraved tang with nickel thumbplate. The breech block has a gold outline. The octagon barrel stretches 8-1/2" and is intricate collar to balance of round. Barrel is a pleasing grey brown patina with sharp legend. Has a solid under rib that has a spot repair at rear. The horn tipped cleaning rod is secured by two steel thimbles attached to rib with one nickel plated thimble at stock. Stock has single wedge with nickel escutcheons and nickel forend cap. The side plate and hammer are engraved and stamped Lane & Reed. The trigger guard extends 9-1/2" and is engraved with decorative tips. Has a smooth steel shotgun buttplate with 4" upper tang that is also engraved. Walnut stock features fine engraving at wrist and is a beautiful dark American walnut with nice grain. There is an epoxy repair at the rear thimble on foreend with a 3/4" stress crack in two places, that once repaired, this rifle would be in superb condition. Has a clean bore with usual black powder abrasions. A high quality early American fowling piece.
