Barrel length 18", .44-40 caliber. This is a very interesting little carbine. For all intents and purposes, it is a standard Model 1892 Saddle Ring Carbine, in the desirable .44 caliber that features: full magazine, two barrel bands, post front sight, folding carbine ladder rear sight, saddle ring and stud, walnut stocks with carbine butt plate, and standard blue finish. According to the Winchester date code, this was manufactured in 1899, but the factory research lists this carbine as having serial number applied in 1901. All metal is a smooth grey brown patina with sharp legends. Walnut stock is original, proud to metal, with usual bumps and bruises and some dry age cracking at wrist and butt. Action is fine, visible rifling but worn. The unusual feature of this carbine is that is sports a spot on 18" barrel instead of the normal 20". Factory research gives no information on this carbine except type and caliber. The patina on the muzzle, along with the setback, front sight placement, magazine placement, shows no signs of having been altered outside of the factory. One can only hazard a guess whether this was factory or period altered however it is not uncommon for the 18" barrel to not be mentioned. There is no sign that it was done outside of the factory. It has been in this configuration since inception. The factory does not confirm or deny present barrel length.
