.58 percussion, barrel length 40". Manufactured in 1861-1865. It is estimated that Colt produced between 75,000-100,000 contract muskets, many of them were supplied to State contracts. This is such a rifle and was manufactured for the State of New Jersey. The left side of the barrel and stock are stamped "NJ". Top barrel flat is dated 1863 with "VP" proof. The lock is dated 1863 and is stamped "US" with Colt's address. This rifle was finished in the white and for all intents and purposes replicates the Springfield muskets of the era. The three barrel bands all have the "U" stamp. Butt plate is stamped "US". Sports the Springfield type flip up rear sight with standard front sight. Walnut stock, with ramrod. Stock is in excellent condition with usual bumps and bruises, and some oil staining at butt. The barrel is a beautiful pleasing patina and has its original bayonet. It has a strong, clean rifled bore.
