.58 percussion, barrel length 40". Referred to as the Type II, manufactured by Springfield Armory. It is your standard military issue Civil War rifle. Top of barrel is dated 1864. Left side of barrel has the "VP" proof. Cartouche on left side is ESA in oval, visible but light. Lock is dated 1864 with US Springfield. It has the standard folding leaf rear battle sight which is a little loose. Three barrel bands are stamped "U". The butt plate is stamped "US". Walnut stocks are very good with usual minor dings. Metal is finished in the white and exhibits age freckling with some salt and pepper at breech. Lock and hammer have turned a dark grey. Middle barrel band has been lightly cleaned. Very good bore with powder residue.
