Barrel length 29.6", .50-70 caliber. Utilizing the basic Model 1868 rifle, Springfield began production of a shorter, lighter version known as the Cadet rifle in 1870 with the majority of 3,400 rifles manufactured between April and September 1871. They have several very distinctive features to include: two barrel bands with no provision for sling swivels 15-5/8" apart, the front sight is set 1-1/4" from muzzle, has the standard M68 rear sight, has the single ESA cartouche in oval on left side of stock, it is serial numbered on the frame and barrel on left side, barrel was finished in the white, frame was blued, and the block was oil case hardened. The block is dated "1870" with eagle head and "US". Side plate is stamped "US Springfield" with eagle and arrows and dated 1863. No provision for sling swivel on trigger guard. It has the narrow butt plate that is 1-1/2" at its widest point, a 1/4" thinner than standard trapdoor. The butt plate is stamped "US". Barrel bands are stamped "U". Rifle measures 48.8" in length. The wood around barrel is narrower than standard. It has a bright, near mint, 3 groove barrel (proper). It has a standard 1868 style metal cleaning rod and fore-end tip. Action is perfect. Stock is excellent with a couple minor dings. The barrel, which was left in the white, exhibits usual brown age spotting. An exceptionally clean and very scarce US Trapdoor Springfield.
