.58 Percussion barrel length 40". During the Civil War a Springfield Armory contracted numerous manufacturers to build what are now referred to as contract muskets, all of which followed the basic 1863 Springfield configuration. Lock is dated 1863 and bears the U.S. American Eagle logo, and is stamped Savage R.F.A.. Middletown, CT. Sports the typical 3 barrel bands with sling swivel on middle band and trigger guard with walnut stocks that bear government inspector marks on the left side. Has the standard military folding leaf rear sight and post front with metal ramrod. All metal is a very smooth blue brown patina. Top of barrel is dated 1863, and left side of barrel has the V.P. eagle head proof mark. Walnut stock is in near mint condition, with just a couple of minor impressions. Near mint original nipple. Bore is near mint. This Civil War musket does not appear to have seen any real use, and is one of the finest examples of this contractor that we have seen.
