5-1/2" barrel in .44-40 caliber. This was the last offering from the Merwin Hulbert Co. for their large .44 caliber revolvers and is considered by many to be one of the finest revolvers manufactured in their era. Features include the solid barrel rib as found on the Smith & Wesson .44 double actions with the closed top, six shot, double action, folding hammer, factory nickel finish, case colored trigger guard, case colored hammer and trigger, with a fine pair of mother of pearl grips. These were unusual takedown models that allowed for instant interchanging of barrels of different lengths. This example sports the more common 5-1/2" barrel. Has sharp barrel and frame legends. Action is tight as new in both single and double. the barrel and frame retain 90%+ factory original nickel finish with some minor blemishes and age spots. The hammer has strong case colors, trigger guard retains a strong amount of case colors. Butt has the original lanyard ring. The cylinder retains approximately 50% original nickel with the balance blending and fine line surface scratches around circumference. Strong pronounced rifled bore. Extremely clean. Overall, a very fine 1880s double action .44-40 in far above average condition.
