According to factory records this rifle was manufactured September 12th, 1878 with 28" octagon barrel, full magazine chambered for the .45-75 Winchester cartridge. This early first model 1876 Rifle with Open Top receiver has two piece straight grained American walnut stocks with trap for cleaning rods. These early Open Top rifles are rarely found in any type of collectible condition. This is a very nice overall example that appears to be untouched and all authentic. The barrel and magazine have lost most of their respected factory applied finishes and have turned to a very light and mellow mottled patina. Receiver has no factory blue remaining and has turned a dove grey. Two piece walnut stocks are very good with one very small corner chip at confluence of receiver tang and buttstock. The varnish is worn but visible in more protected areas. Wood is darkening from handling with numerous small bruises and abrasions. This is a fine period 1876 rifle with the desirable Open Top receiver. Mechanics are crisp and in proper functioning order. Bore is very good with slight darkness in the grooves.
