24" Original Springfield barrel has been slimmed but retains 5-20 date behind front sight base holding gold bead. Stud for front sling eye is banded-on. Springfield action is mainly unaltered, with the exception of the addition of Lyman 48 rear sight and flattening and checkering of bottom of bolt knob. Standard bottom metal is near fully engraved with Germanic scrolling acanthus surrounding finely detailed scene of bull moose tramping through cutover woodlands on floorplate. Rear portion of plate is engraved "S. R. GRIFFIN" "NEW YORK". Trigger guard bow is also engraved with scroll surrounding gold monogram "BS". This fine engraving is most likely the work of the celebrated Rudolf Kornbrath of Hartford, CT. Early style Seymour Griffin stock with long forend and thin comb is made of a fine piece of well streaked and lightly fiddle figured European walnut. It measures 13-7/8" over checkered and engraved steel buttplate with trap. Very well cut point pattern checkering is at grip and forend. Stock also features sling eyes and a horn grip cap. CONDITION: Excellent, original, possibly unfired, retaining nearly all custom blue on all metal parts, except imported buttplate which is French gray. Stock is dry, with slightly open grain, checkering still sharp and light in color. Bore is excellent. Action smooth. Weight: 7 lbs. 13 oz. As fine an example of an early Griffin as one could ever hope to find. From the G. Thomas Puett Collection.
