According to Cody Firearms Museum records this gun was completed January 1968 for cowboy movie hero, Roy Rogers, with name plate engraved with his name. 28" and 30" Barrels have raised matted ventilated ribs, marked "CUSTOM BUILT BY WINCHESTER FOR ROY ROGERS" in milled out portion at rear of ribs. There are 2-1/2" triangles of exceptionally well cut semi-relief open shaded scroll at breech ends. Engine turned barrel flats are stamped with serial numbers, gauge, and chamber information along with Winchester proofs. 30" Barrels are marked for mod and full; 28" barrels, skeet 1 and 2. Loop of 28" barrels is marked "1"; 30" barrels, "2", matching marks are at front interiors of forend irons. Blued flat side action has all correct markings on engine turned water table, and is fitted with non-automatic safety and gold-plated single non-selective trigger. Action is engraved in "Grand American" style with oak leaf carved fences, but is obviously special order throughout with scenes and characters important in Roy's life. on the left side, In a background of well cut open shaded scroll, we have a vignette of Roy's pointer, Sam, pointing a flushing pheasant in open woodlands. Right side depicts Roy (?) in cowboy hat shooting trap with mountains in background, he appears to be aiming at a 1966 dated clay target marked "Winchester National Claybird Tournament". Roy and Dale were avid trap and skeet shooters. Bottom of action portrays two animals important in Roy and Dale's life; his German Shepherd, Bullet, is seated and looking toward you at front, and his horse, Trigger, is rearing with cactus in background at rear. Trigger guard bow depicts the face of a long horn steer. All of these major subjects are semi-relief inlaid in gold. Steel grip cap with more scroll engraving is outlined in gold wire with "ROY" "GRAND" "AMERICAN" in gold at bottom. Superb XXXX feather crotch American walnut pistol grip buttstock measures 14-3/8" over leather faced pad. Grip and side panels are "B carved" with Fleur-di-lis and ribbons throughout fancy pattern checkering which has large flourishes into butt. A gold oval on toe line is engraved "DALE" (specified in factory letter). Each barrel set has its own matching beavertail ejector forend with inset contrasting wood tip, which has usual J-spring and knurled secondary release. Included with gun is a considerable amount of paperwork and photographs, including factory letter, certificate of authenticity that "this item was personally owned and used by cowboy star, Roy Rogers", and with Roy Rogers Museum description of the gun. Photographs include Roy and Dale as well as Roy being presented this gun. Also included are laminated pages from December 1991 AMERICAN RIFLEMAN of article by Ned Schwing which pictures Roy touring the Winchester Custom Shop. Also included is the guns original brown leather case with stitched leather corners with top embossed "R. R", which is also on central medallion of canvas outer cover. Interior of case is lined in burgundy cloth and has space for gun and both sets of barrels. Case contains a pair of snap caps and a square oil bottle. Excellent, nearly as new, appears little fired since proof, retaining essentially all original factory finishes on wood and metal surfaces. Bores are excellent. Mechanically excellent. Case leather is excellent with some marks and scratches, as protected by its outer cover which is excellent. Interior is very fine with some marks and rubs.
