This is a scarce example of a Confederate-altered 3rd Model Virginia Manufactory cavalry saber, modified for use by the state of Virginia during the Civil War. The saber has been shortened from its original 36” blade length to 34" and the blade has been slimmed in width along its entire length. The heavily curved double-fullered blade last tapers to a spear point at the tip. The iron birds head pommel hilt has the usual seven-slot sheet iron guard. The leather wrapped wood grip has seven grooves. The sword is complete with its original Confederate Civil War period iron scabbard with brass mounts. The mounts both have brass rings. CONDITION: Blade retains a grey patina, showing heavy sharpening to edge and some areas of minor forging flaws. Hilt retains a dark heavy brown patina with minor bending at knucklebow. Grip retains nearly all of its original leather wrap with only minor losses and scuffing. Scabbard retains about 80% of period crazed black finish. Mounts retain a dark unpolished patina. A very scarce and desirable Confederate-altered Virginia cavalry saber. DMG CORRECTION: Additional provided paperwork traces the sword to the October 2010 James D. Julia sale, where it was lot 2344. PROVENANCE: Charles Radcliffe Collection.
