British World War II brass flash spotting scope, mounted on a leveling bracket stamped "Cooke Troughton & Simms Ltd / No. 814 / Instrument Flash Spotting / No. 4 MK III / (broad arrow)". Instrument is fitted with various levels, dials and gauges, optics are cloudy. Contained within a steel case marked "(broad arrow) Instrument Flash Spotting No 4 Mk III". The purpose of flash-spotting was to locate enemy artillery batteries using cross-observation of muzzle flashes from at least three different locations. Flash-spotting troops were organised into an observation section of flash-spotting posts that reported their observed bearings of muzzle flashes to their troop headquarters. CONDITION: Appears to be in very good to excellent condition, with no guarantee of its functionality. DG
