Pin back medal in three sections. Top section reads "Floyd Rifles" in banner with elaborate designs. Attached to second section which reads "THE / ROSS-DREW / MEDAL" with crossed guns and elaborate designs en suite with topmost section. Third section is the full medal, inscribed around circumference "PRESENTED 2D GEORGIA BATTN JULY - 3 - 9 (?)", "WON MAY 1 - 1891 '92 '93 BY PRIVATE C.B. DREW." Reverse inscribed "Presented by / Honl. Member / Chas L. Ross / The Company controls this Badge until won by the same Marksman in Three Consecutive Annual Contests." Charles L. Ross is a known member of Company C of the 2nd Georgia Batallion, known as the Floyd Rifles. Charles Ross was known to have seen action at Gettysburg, but research does not indicate precisely for what reason this medal was created. An 1879 book for the Floyd Rifles indicates that there were presentation exercises for the presentation of the Medal, but locating a copy of the book has been extremely difficult. In the June 2018 Morphy Edged Weapons and Militaria Sale, another Medal was sold that references the Floyd Rifles and was given to C.B. Drew for returning "The Gettysburg Medal" in 1893. Given the dating of the present medal and the inscription, this appears to be the medal that Drew returned. CONDITION: Very good for its age, with some age patination. Right side claw on the medal has detached from its soldering point, but has done so cleanly. Legends are legible, but somewhat soft in a few corners. EW
IDENTIFIED CONFEDERATE ROSS-DREW FLOYD RIFLES MEDAL.
