This medal appears to be the one given to Captain Bedford Pim in 1865 upon his appointment to Justice of the Peace in Westminster in 1865. An article by Ian McInnes, included, mentions that King George III gave the Magistrates of the City of Westminster "permission to distinguish themselves by wearing the arms of the City with the emblems on Magistracy on a gold shield fastened to a ribbon hanging from the neck" and shows a photo of Pim wearing this medal. McInnes also lists an inscription on the reverse of Bedford's medal, which matches. Inscription on reverse reads "Captain / Bedford Pim JP / United / Services Club / London, S.W. / November / 1865". Medal is elaborately emblazoned with an abbreviated version of the Arms of Westminster, depicting the portcullis, roses, and cross-with-martlets. Additionally, an ribbon runs under the central medal which reads "Discite Justitiam Moniti" (Translation: Be warned, and learn justice) with accompanying decorative ribbons running to the suspender bar. Suspender bar features an elaborate crown at claw, over a sword and scales that hang down to obscure the roses of the Arms of Westminster. Gold plated. CONDITION: Very good, complete. Gold plating has taken on a lovely rich mustard brass color. There is some high edge wear; one particular area at very bottom of medal that has silvered, and one chip on the reverse side of the medal at approximately 11 o'clock. EW
