Lot consists of: (A) Circa 1812-1820's wooden Massachusetts militia canteen with painted “M.S." letters. This canteen has all three leather carrying strips present. Wood plug is absent as normally seen. Canteen measures 7-1/4" across X 2-3/4" thick and retains 100% of its original matte black paint. Red lettered initials “M.S." are 1-1/2" tall. Reverse is maker stamped: "J. BURR". (B) New York State War of 1812 canteen. Similar examples can be found in O'Donnell's book on US canteens. Often referred to as "later-1812" pattern and also the "1813 pattern." This pattern replaced the "cheese box" style in federal contracts late in 1812. Retains 80% of the original blue-gray paint and stenciled "S.N.Y" (State of New York) letters. Small stamped maker's mark on the reverse side "T. ARENTS." maker stamp on the reverse for Thomas Arents, a NY City woodworker filling government contracts 1806 to 1822. Measures: 7-1/4" across X 2-3/4" thick. (C) War of 1812 period "cheese box" style canteen with stenciled black "US" letters drop shadowed in dark red. Pleasing, all original blue green paint overall. Measures 6-1/2" x 2-1/2." BM
