US Regulation 1840 pattern cavalry officer's saber. Used in the Mexican War and early Indian Wars on the plains, but also preferred by some Civil War cavalry officers for its heavier blade and construction. Gilt brass hilt, wire bound leather grip, etched blade with pad in place under guard. Blade etched with Ames maker address on reverse, military and floral motifs, liberty cap on pole among trophy of arms, mounted officer with bicorne hat, foliate US, Indian with raised tomahawk. Obverse etched with vines and branches, oak leaves and acorns, display of arms with US flag. CONDITION: Very good with gilt remaining in recessed areas of cast floral designs in hilt. Some rubbing to upper pommel face, outside of upper branch, etc. Leather and wire of grip are in place and tight. Edge and point are good. Metal is bright with thin frosting, very visible etching on both flats and along back edge. A couple of small grey spots on reverse. Thin scattered grey on obverse near base and one spot near termination of frosting. None affect the visibility or legibility of the etching. Browned scabbard is very good. No dents or dings. Rings, drag and throat in place. A very good example of a regulation US cavalry saber. PROVENANCE: From the Collection of George M. Rapport.
