Regulation 1826 pattern US Navy cutlass. Nathan Starr had a contract for 2,000 in 1826, delivered and inspected in 1827. Standard configuration: blackened iron guard, cylindrical, ribbed wood grip with upper and lower ferrules, curved single edge blade with narrow fuller. CONDITION: Very good. Hilt retains about all of its black japanning. Very slight looseness to grip, but no chips or losses. Blade with good edge and point. No chips. Smooth metal, bright mixed with grey. One tight fracture in blade at top edge 3-3/4" from guard, extends 3/4" down on reverse, but stable and not evident on obverse. Two small partial blade stamps on reverse near guard, but these cutlasses were repeatedly cleaned and polished during their long service and markings are often obliterated. Scabbard is very good. Drag, stud and throat flanges in place. One 2" section of paint loss on reverse, 6" from hilt, probably from a removed identification or pricing label. A very good example of a regulation pre-Civil War US Navy sidearm. SR. PROVENANCE: From the Collection of George M. Rapport.
